Abelardo Barroso

Abelardo Barroso Dargeles (Havana, September 21, 1905-ibidem September 27, 1972) was the first Cuban son singer known as sonero mayor and thus recognized by the public. He was a singer with the Sexteto Habanero in 1925 and recorded with Alfredo Boloña's Sexteto Boloña in 1926.

Also, in 1927, he was the singer of Ignacio Piñeiro's National Septet. With all these groups he recorded many songs in the city of New York, 1 and remained in the public's favor throughout his career.

In 1930 he joined the Salmerón variety group, with which he toured Spain. Returning to Cuba in 1931, he joined the Ernesto Muñoz Orchestra and in 1933 he founded the charanga López & Barroso with Orestes López, at the same time he alternated with the Sexteto Universo. In 1935 he founded the Pinin Sextet. and he also performed with the bands of Andrés Laferté and Everado Ordaz. In 1939, he joined the important brass band Maravillas del Siglo and made appearances on Radio COCO.

During the 1940s he worked at the Sans-Souci cabaret until 1948, when he became director and singer of the National Police Band.

He eventually created his own band, Orquesta Sensación, a first class charanga. They won a gold record for their song En Guantánamo and Arráncame la vida. With this orchestra he appeared in Miami in 1957 and in New York in 1959 and 1960. Abelardo retired in 1969.
