The great composer, trumpeter and conductor Antonio María Taño López, better known as Tony Taño, was born on April 20, 1938, in Artemisa. The excellent composer and trumpeter began as director of choirs: mixed and children's, and arranger of popular orchestras such as the ICRT. For this medium, he orchestrated the Spanish zarzuelas. He worked as musical director of the Musical Theater of Havana, of which he was a founder. At that stage he composed the music for several musical comedies, wrote music for cartoons and feature films.

He was president of the Cuban Association of Musical Composers and Authors, ACCAM, since its foundation in 1984. He worked as musical advisor to the Ministry of Culture. The arranger and musical director, in his long and fruitful artistic career, toured different countries such as the United States, Chile, Mexico, Spain, Austria, Holland, Ireland, among others. He received an award at the International Song Festival of Viña del Mar, in Chile, and was also awarded at the Cádiz Film Festival. Among his works, it is worth mentioning the musical comedy “Las mil y una noche guajiras” Although he is nationally known for his work “La batea” popularized in the late 1960s.

Tony represented Cuba in important song contests in countries of the socialist camp. and conducted the orchestras in the two editions of the Varadero Festival. This extraordinary composer, instrumentalist and arranger passed away on January 16, 2018, in Havana, close to turning 80 years old. His creation within the musical universe of our country will always be remembered, the multiplicity of his work in different musical genres and the majesty in the orchestral direction constitute an example of dedication for the artistic academy.
