Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Cuban pianist and composer, nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards for Supernova, best Latin jazz album in 2002. Author of works such as: “João” and “Mima”.
He worked with the Aragón, Grupo Síntesis, Sonido Contemporáneo (directed by saxophonist Nicolás Reinoso), Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music, Todos Estrellas and Van Van orchestras. He was a pianist accompanying the singers Beatriz Márquez, Soledad Delgado, Ela Calvo, Pablo Milanés, Alina Sánchez.
In 1983 he founded the Proyecto group, with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, director and piano; Felipe Cabrera, bassoon and bass; Horacio Hernández (El Negro), drums, Roberto Vizcaíno, Cuban percussion; Lázaro Cruz, trumpet and flugelhorn; Rafael Carrasco, flute and tenor saxophone; Reinaldo Melián, trumpet and flugelhorn; With this group he participated, in 1985, in the North Sea Festival in Holland, from where he continued his trip to England to perform during the Festival of Cuban Latin Jazz Groups at the Ronnie Scott Club; he appeared at the Cuban Culture Day held in Spain; on Mount Fuji, Japan; Belgium; German Federal Republic; Montmartre; Copenhagen; Stinks Festival, Antwerp; Amsterdam Paradise Club; Salsa Festival in West Berlin, in which, in addition, Irakere, Ray Barreto, Azymuth, Gato Barbieri, Tania María, Michel Camilo, Astrud Gilberto, Ornette Coleman, Al Dimeola and Phil Woode participated.
He founded the Cuban Quartet, with Felipe Cabrera, bass; Reinaldo Melián, trumpet, and Julio César Barreto, drums. He has worked with Jack de Johnette, Charlie Haden, John Patitucci, Ron Carter, David Valentin, John FUDIS, Jim Hall, Chick Corea, Paul Motian; the groups Weather Update, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Lewis, Tete Montoliu and Luis Ortiz (Perico). He obtained the Palmarés de Jazz awards, granted by the French Academy of Arts; Basel Grand Prix, for his artistic values in Lugano. In Havana, he performed at jazz festivals with, among others, Dizzy Gillespie.
